Circle of Sisterhood

We start our school day by gathering together in a Circle of Sisterhood.

Together we share this morning affirmation:

Today is a bright new day.  On this day and every day, I am beautiful.  I am intelligent.  I am compassionate.  I am respectful.  I am courageous.  I am creative.  I am strong.  I am persistent. I am resilient. I am proud.  I am eager.   I am possible.

This time together gives us the opportunity to talk and share.    Recognizing that the words of others can present powerful opportunities for meaningful discussion, we discuss the following quotations in the first trimester of 2010-11.

1.  The strongest bond of human sympathy outside the family relation should be one uniting working people of all nations and tongues and kindreds.   Abraham Lincoln

2. Yes, our greatness as a nation has depended on individual initiative, on a belief in the free market. But it has also depended on our sense of mutual regard for each other, of mutual responsibility. The idea that everybody has a stake in the country, that we're all in it together and everybody's got a shot at opportunity.   Barack Obama

3. We were born to unite with our fellow men, and to join in  community with the human race.  Cicero

4. This is the duty of our generation as we enter the twenty-first century -- solidarity with the weak, the persecuted, the lonely, the sick, and those in despair. It is expressed by the desire to give a noble and humanizing meaning to a community in which all members will define themselves not by their own identity but by that of others.  Elie Wiesel

5. I have spoken of a thousand points of light, of all the community organizations that are spread like stars throughout the Nation, doing good.   George W. Bush

6. The American city should be a collection of communities where every member has a right to belong. It should be a place where every man feels safe on his streets and in the house of his friends. It should be a place where each individual's dignity and self-respect is strengthened by the respect and affection of his neighbors. It should be a place where each of us can find the satisfaction and warmth which comes from being a member of the community of man. This is what man sought at the dawn of civilization. It is what we seek today.  Lyndon B. Johnson

7. The challenge of social justice is to evoke a sense of community that we need to make our nation a better place, just as we make it a safer place.  Marian Wright Edelman

8. We don't accomplish anything in this world alone ... and whatever happens is the result of the whole tapestry of one's life and all the weavings of individual threads from one to another that creates something.                              Sandra Day O'Connor

10. Human beings are more alike than unalike, and what is true anywhere is true everywhere.  Maya Angelou

                           11. To us, family means putting your arms around each other and being there.  Barbara Bush

12. Life's most persistent and urgent question is, " What are you doing for others?"  Martin Luther King, Jr.

13. The best agreement we can make with people is, “Let there be truth between us two forevermore."                      Ralph Waldo Emerson

14.Truth is powerful and it prevails. Sojourner Truth

15.   One of the lessons that I grew up with was to always stay true to yourself and never let what somebody else says distract you from your goals.  Michelle Obama

Before beginning our instructional day, we recite the CCSG Promise:

At CCSG, we gather to nurture our spirits and to put our faith into action by helping ourselves, our community, our city, our state, our country, and our world.  We believe in the worth and dignity of every person.  We honor the differences among us.  We respect each other's opinions and ideas.  We understand that our actions today will affect our future and people of future generations.  We strive for peace and harmony in all that we do.  We can do anything we put our minds to.
