The Power of Dreaming

There is great power in dreaming.  For a long time, I dreamed of a school supported by community and focused on learning through living.  Today, CCSG is open with 18 5th grade girls. We just completed our first week of school.

We did a lot this week: talked, sang, created, traveled, observed, shared, told stories, and explored design.  On Friday, I asked our scholars if they knew any famous quotations.  They all said no.  So, I threw one out there -- "I have a dream."  Their hands flew high -- they called "Me, Me.."  "Dr. Martin Luther King,"  they said.  "Yes," I said,  "and he had a big powerful dream didn't he? "   The girls all knew what he dreamed.  They all knew how he contributed to his community and to the world community.

But, when I asked the girls about their dreams, they stumbled some -- the question is, "Can a 5th grade girl create a dream as big and powerful as Dr. Martin Luther King?"

I say  -- YES!  So, next week we are going to focus more on dreaming big.  We are going to complete the Dream Boards the girls started this week and, more importantly, we are going to talk about people with big dreams and what it takes to change dreams into realities.

You see, I hope, in a small way, that living my dream has set an example for our scholars -- that dreams are valuable and that they can transform into realities and it really can be as simple as promising to make it so.  That's what many of the world's most influential people did.  That's what I did. That's what our teachers are doing.  And, that is what our scholars will do.  We expect it. We promise it.  And, so it will be!

Stay tuned!
